Judge Rejects Former North Wind Adviser’s Efforts to Be Reinstated & Former Editor’s Claim of Retaliation
A federal judge has denied Cheryl Reed’s legal challenge to be reinstated as faculty adviser of The North Wind student newspaper at Northern Michigan University. According to The Detroit Free Press, the judge also rejected former managing editor Michael Williams’s claim that he was passed over for the EIC job in retaliation for the paper’s aggressive coverage of the school this past year.
In issuing the ruling, the judge called the case “mostly sound and fury” — indicating more open, reasoned communication between the North Wind staff and NMU officials might have prevented the situation from growing so inflamed.
I’ve reached out to Williams for comment. Here is a recent chat I had with him on College Media Podcast.
