Boston’s Daily Free Press Publishes April Fools’ Day Stories on Cinderella Prostitution, Dwarf Gang Rape

Update: Daily Free Press editor-in-chief fired from paper

The Daily Free Press at Boston University is already apologizing for the April Fools’ Day issue it released earlier today after receiving immense reader criticism.

Spoof stories in the issue, dubbed The Disney Free Press, discussed Cinderella’s alleged involvement in a prostitution ring, BU frat brothers slipping Alice in Wonderland LSD, and the dwarves from Snow White participating in a group rape of a female BU student.

As the headline of a Boston community news site story asks, “It’s just not April Fools’ Day without some Disney rape, murder, and prostitution jokes, eh?”

A portion of the group rape piece, which was the lead front-page story in the satirical issue: “Seven frat dwarves were arrested last night after they allegedly dragged and gangbanged a female Boston University student in an Allston Village cabin.  The female victim, described as the ‘fairest of them all,’ is reported to have been roofied after drinking an appletini at a Beta Rho Omega fraternity party, according to Captain Robert Hook of the BU Police Department.”

Readers are condemning the stories for perpetuating a campus rape culture and mocking victims of sexual assault.  Sample tweet: “Reading the sick victim-blaming rape-endorsing shit from @dailyfreepress is turning my stomach.  Are you animals?  What is WRONG with you ppl?”

The Boston Globe reports: “At BU, sexual assault has become an especially sensitive topic since two BU ice hockey players were charged in the past several months.  Today, dozens of students and alumni took to Twitter and Facebook to vent their anger at the publication.  ‘Beyond embarrassed and ashamed to be a BU Alumni today,’ wrote one.  Another student, on Facebook, noted that the newspaper had just finished covering a Take Back the Night rally against sexual assault. ‘I don’t know how reporters can go from writing and tweeting about TBTN to making light of sexual assault,’ she wrote. ‘In no context was this article even remotely appropriate.'”

A portion of the paper’s apology: “We at The Daily Free Press want to apologize for the callous and ignorant stories we ran in our annual print-only April Fools’ Day issue on Monday, April 2.  Our aim was to publish satirical material about Boston University as a whole, and we did not intend to perpetuate harmful stereotypes or inappropriately make light of serious issues.  Simply put, we should have exercised caution. Our decisions were juvenile and insensitive. We deeply regret our heartless behavior and did not mean to personally offend anyone.”
