Interesting Facts at NYC12: A Masculine Cheerleader Crashed the UGA Red & Black (#nyc12)

Earlier this semester, a female cheerleader who can bench press more than 150 pounds broke The Red & Black.  The University of Georgia student newspaper ran a story on an uber-muscular cheerleader, a case of stereotype defiance and body image reimagining.  It went viral, in a big way, racking up roughly 750,000 hits.

At an NYC12 session just moments ago outlining the paper’s shift to a digital-first philosophy, editorial adviser Ed Morales revealed that the cheerleader piece’s popularity literally crashed the website for a time.  It led the Red & Black to realize it needed outside support.  The paper is moving its web base to TownNews soon.
