Police Search for Suspects, Deem Attack on Bridgewater State Student Journalist a Hate Crime

A campus rally is planned Tuesday at Bridgewater State University, in response to an alleged recent attack on an editor of the BSU student newspaper The Comment.  As I previously posted, a pair of student-age individuals purportedly punched the Comment staffer out of anger over an opinion piece she wrote supporting gay marriage.

As paper itself reports, “Police are continuing to investigate the incident, in which Destinie Mogg-Barkalow, an editorial assistant and staff writer for the Comment, says she was attacked by a man and a woman at around 6 p.m. Thursday night. Mogg-Barkalow, who was allegedly punched by the woman, was not seriously hurt in the incident. But, because she is gay and because the article was written in support of gay marriage, police are investigating it as a hate crime and the incident has drawn widespread media attention.”

Police released composite sketches of the suspects earlier today.
